Galectin-3 expression in breast cancer
Summary:
Firstly, there is a brief historical review of breast surgery. In addition, reference is made to the anatomy, development and physiology of the breast. Diagnostic tests and benign and malignant breast diseases are analyzed. Finally, a short reference is made to breast cancer during pregnancy.
In the special section, extensive reference is made to galectins. Specifically, galectins are a family of 15 carbohydrate-binding proteins. They interact with glycoproteins both in the extracellular and intracellular environment and regulate various biological cycles such as cell growth, cell differentiation, cell adhesion and apoptosis. In biomolecular studies, some expression patterns have been shown to correlate cancer metastases with apoptosis. Therefore, galectins could be used as potential markers for early tumor recognition, long-term prognosis and a better treatment basis. Galactin-3 (Gal-3) is a protein of the lectin family and plays an important role intracellular as a signal and extracellular as a strong pro-inflammatory protein and is involved in cell growth, homeostasis, apoptosis, adhesion, metastasis, signaling induction, angiogenesis, fibrosis, cancer progression and metastases. Gal-3 expression rate has been shown to be significantly higher in breast cancer tissue than in adjacent normal tissue. Gal-3 expression has a protective role in cell survival through different pathways and more specifically through DNA repair and inhibition of apoptosis after chemotherapy.
Therefore, the expression of Gal-3 in breast cancer can be an important factor in choosing the most appropriate treatment.
