The Didactics in the New Method Theory and Practice Textbooks of Psaltic (Chanting) Art
Summary:
In recent decades, Byzantine Music is taught in the Music and Ecclesiastical Schools of our country and is part of the Curriculum. It is also included in the Curriculum of five University Departments of Music Studies within the wider branch of Byzantine Musicology. In addition, it is taught in Conservatories and Music Schools as an autonomous music study. Although there is a planned Curriculum in the aforementioned educational environments, there is no indicative and common guide with a suggested teaching methodology for teachers, resulting in different opinions on basic didactic issues. Dozens of independent publications of Byzantine Music Theory and Practice textbooks during the 19th and 20th centuries failed to address these issues together.
The purpose of this paper is the presentation and systematic study of the didactic methodology in Byzantine Music, as recorded in the Music Theory and Practice textbooks of Psaltic Art from Chrysanthos until today, with the aim of helping to form a modern teaching method. The material is studied, compared and categorized. First, after a brief history of Byzantine Music and the New Method, the general elements, contents and material of the Byzantine Music Theory and Practice textbooks are presented. Then, specific topics of Didactics are presented, such as the teaching objectives, the teaching stages and the proposed teaching tools. Finally, a brief reference is made to the current instruction of Byzantine Music in various formal educational contexts.
The present study can assist in answering questions about, whether a teaching approach emerges through the Byzantine Music Theory and Practice textbooks which can be used in the creation of a teaching or school textbook in the future, what the relationship between the teaching of Byzantine Music and other external music is, as well as how the phenomenon of the continuous publication of independent theoretical textbooks during the 19th and 20th century could contribute to the educational practice.
