The creation of greek communities in the countries of Rio de la Plata during the second half of the 19th century until the 20th century
Summary:
The phenomenon of migration from Europe to Río de la Plata region in the second half of the 19th century until the 20th is a result of political, social and economic factors (Gerstner, 2008). In Greece, the long-term political instability and the constant wars led the inhabitants of the country to expatriation (Tamis 15). The present study deals with the creation of Greek communities in Argentina and Uruguay at the specific time period and the element of philhellenism in these countries. Through the presentation of some of the main events of that time and interviews with Greek immigrants in these areas but also with local philhellenes, this paper aims to highlight the causes of Greek immigration and the cultural link between the host countries studied with Greece.
