The teaching of Semiotics in Greek higher education
Summary:
Educational Semiotics is the field of study that investigates signs around us and how any human can learn things by observing and interpreting them. On a first level, taking into account that Edusemiotics is an emerging field of study that is still under investigation, this dissertation is based on the study of Edusemiotics following a bibliographic research as well as aiming at presenting the scientific background of this field. On a second level, the researcher employs the method of record classification in order to discover how Semiotics (and its variants) is taught in the Greek universities, confirm the bibliographic information already acknowledged and highlight new aspects of this topic. In this context, the dissertation investigates 1). the relationship between Semiotics and education, 2). the circumstances under which Edusemiotics can be employed, 3). the possible results when Edusemiotics takes place, 4). how Semiotics (and its variants) is taught in the Greek universities. As far as the bibliographic research findings are concerned, the researcher found that 1). Semiotics existed prior to education having the form of semiosis rather than being a scientific field of study as we know it nowadays, 2) Edusemiotics can be employed taking the shape of a methodology that influences the wide range of human sciences on the way they are taught, and 3). the value of Edusemiotics lies not only in the teaching process but also the human evolution. Last but not least, record classification findings indicate that Semiotics is not considered to be an independent undergraduate or postgraduate curriculum in the Greek universities but, instead, Semiotics (and its variants) is taught as a part both of undergraduate and postgraduate programs of Humanitarian Studies, Communication Studies, Architectural Studies, Arts & Cultural Studies, Pedagogical Studies and Medical Studies.
