Sense, perception and interpretation. Aspects of the postmodern aesthetics of Michel Foucault
Summary:
Passing from the seventh to the eighth decade of the last century marked a turning point in Michel Foucault’s research method. His work characterized by the transition from archaeology to genealogy; archaeology being focused on the study of the relationships between the things and the words: the latter communicating the meaning of the former by virtue of tradition or habit; genealogy thoroughly examines the process of shaping the modern subject by the forms of power. In the voluminous extent of his work on these two principal topics, which constitute the axes of the present study, there can be detected a minimal but remarkably vivid segment that deals with painting. This segment, in the present case, will serve as a prism through which Foucault’s practices and forms of methodological approach are analyzed.
Do structures of discourse as well as power relations have any connection with painting? Or, otherwise, could the corresponding methodological framework be discerned through the study of Foucault’s writings and sayings about painting? Is the articulation of archaeology or genealogy of art possible, and if yes, to what extent? Could there be found any continuity and consistency in relation to the spectrum of his ideas? These are some questions raised and addressed in the text that follows.
