Factors of professional satisfaction and psycho-emotional burden of nursing staff in renal units: Systematic review
Summary:
Introduction- Background: The nurses who work at renal units daily confront a complicated environment with high demands, which lead to high stress for workers, and in the same time, the provision of high levels of support is very significant for the maintenance of job satisfaction in high levels. Until today, there have been many relevant primary studies, but there is a significant lack of systematic gathering and analysis of the findings of these studies.
Aim: The main purpose of this study was the critical review of factors involved with job satisfaction and emotional burden of the nursing staff working at renal units.
Methodology: A systematic review was conducted, for which the most suitable articles were found after a searchin the scientific databases Medline/Pubmed and GoogleScholar, with the use of the following combination of keywords: (Job satisfaction” OR “work satisfaction” OR stress OR “work environment” OR burden OR burnout OR fatigue OR distress OR depression OR anxiety OR strain OR stressors OR “professional quality of life” OR “quality of life”) AND (“Renal Unit” OR “Hemodialysis Unit” OR “Dialysis Unit” OR “Hemodialysis Center” OR “Dialysis Center” OR Renal OR kidney OR hemodialysis OR dialysis OR haemodialysis OR nephrology) AND (Nurse OR nurses).
Results: From the search of the literature of the last decade, 587 articles were found, from which, the 40 studies were selected to be suitable for the subject of the present systematic review. These studies were allocated in 3 different categories: (1) the studies concerning the job satisfaction of nurses (8 studies), (2) the studies concerning the job burnout of nurses (12 studies), and (3) the studies concerning other measures indicating the experiences and the emotional burden of nurses working in hemodialysis units (20 studies).
Conclusions: In general, despite the high number of stressors of nurses working in hemodialysis units, these nurses present moderate to high levels of job satisfaction and moderate levels of burnout. However, a significant limitation of the present systematic review was the fact that studies analyzed were quite heterogeneous, mainly in terms of the outcome measures and the data collection tools, and thus, the immediate comparison of the findings of these studies and reaching safe conclusions about whether these findings are confirmed or doubted are impossible.
