Interoception and temporal perception. The role of interoceptive accuracy in the subjective perception of timing.
Summary:
The perception of time is considered a fundamental ability for the human experience, as it is essential for daily functioning and understanding of complex behavior. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the role of interoception, the sense of the internal state of the body and its physiological functions, in estimating time, as well as the role of interoceptive accuracy in the subjective perception of timing. The results of the study may complement previous research, as they may confirm the relationship between interoceptive accuracy and temporal perception, while at the same time add novel data on the effect of interoceptive stimuli on temporal perception. More specifically, the aim of the research is to examine the effect of interoceptive sounds related to bodily sensations (respiratory sounds, heartbeats), on the temporal perception in a temporal bisection task, in adult participants aged 18-35 years. At the same time, the role of interoceptive accuracy is examined through the objective recording of heartbeats and with the simultaneous subjective measurement by the participants. The results showed that there was a significant effect of the signal on the time estimation of the participants, in conditions of exposure to respiratory signals and in particular, an overestimation of some atypical respiratory sounds, while no statistically significant effect of the interoceptive cardiac signals was found. Additionally, interoceptive accuracy appeared to be positively related to temporal estimation in conditions of exposure to atypical respiratory signals. Therefore, new research is needed to draw more accurate conclusions about the role of interoception. The interoceptive mechanism can contribute to other cognitive and emotional processes, which affect physical and mental reactions, such as anxiety and depression, while new avenues will be opened for the creation of new therapeutic clinical interventions, regarding the more accurate understanding and management of internal physical states.
