Leftist nationalism and the Macedonian Question: The case of Prespa Agreement
Summary:
The aim of the current dissertation is to investigate the national discourses that were produced by the Greek social formation from the parties of the left at the time before, after and during the negotiations of the Greek state and the state of the Republic of Macedonia with the purpose of signing the Prespa Agreement.
The investigation of those discourses has as an aim the manifestation of the differences and the similarities of the nationalized connotations and the produced national subjects. The material that this research has used stems from abstracts of digital newspapers from the time between 25.1.2019 and 29.6.2019.
As an analytical method for the investigation of the discourses of the parties was chosen to be Foucault’s discourse analysis. Now, as far as the conclusion of the investigation is concerned it becomes understandable that when the Macedonian issue is at stake in the decade of 1990 (earlier stage) the position of the parties until 2018 is directed at times towards more nationalistic or democratic directions and at times towards more nationalistic ones. However, a solution between the two sides is never achieved.
In addition, as far as the political character of this Agreement is concerned, despite of its nationalism it is mostly anti-nationalistic because of its solving the long term Macedonian Issue in democratic terms and of its championing of enlighting ideas. Also, it is obvious in the discourse of the parties which were involved in the signing of the agreement that the irredentism of the Republic of Macedonia even though it constitutes a national narrative is directed towards a realistic support of the nation by claiming the “national effectiveness” of the Agreement of the national administration, whether in the need for national resistance in the recognition of the state, language and citizenship towards the neighbours that takes place through the agreement.
Finally, it becomes clear that resistance against the imperialist subjection to the foreign western interests is being nationalised. This resistance demands national unity against all those factors that keep “small and weak Greece” imprisoned. Resistance needs to be militant in a masculine way towards the foreign Others. On the other hand, SYRIZA with realistic terms fights against imperialism since it supports the right for self-determination as a tradition of the communist party but also the proof of the progressiveness of the Greek state in comparison to the state of the Republic of Macedonia.
