Original Title:
«Μοτίβα, σύμβολα και αξίες στα παραμύθια του Oscar Wilde»
Translated title:
"Motifs, symbols and values in Oscar Wilde's fairy tales"
Summary:
This paper, approaches hermeneutically the fairy tales from Oscar Wilde's two collections The Happy Prince and Other Tales (1888) and The House of Pomegranates (1891), using the historical-literary method and the principles of modern hermeneutic theory. In the first place, discusses the role that the socio-cultural environment and the author's artistic and ideological influences played on the writing of the tales. Then, the main body of the paper consists of the identification and analysis of the themes-motifs of the fairy tales, which were categorized according to the values they reflect. The broader thematic sections in which the motifs are included refer to the moralistic attitude and the presence of the religious element in the fairy tales, references to art and the influence of Αestheticism, as well as the social criticism and the questioning of the value system of the time. Finally, the function of symbols and allegorical elements in conveying the 'message' from the sender (author) to the receiver (reader) is examined.
