Design, development and formative evaluation of a Augmented Reality application for the school textbook of History of the 4th-grade: AR-haika years
Summary:
The progress observed in technological developments in recent years has made
Augmented Reality (A.R.) a useful and innovative educational tool, as it can enrich
printed books with multimedia content, which is visible through the use of modern
mobile technology devices. However, the use of A.R. applications in school textbooks
and the linking of them to the curriculum is limited, especially in the subject of History.
The direct link of such applications with constructivism and active learning is in line
with the trend towards student-centered approaches. In this context, the present research aims at the design, development, and formative evaluation of the A.R. application “AR-haika Years”, which augments the 4th-grade history textbook, adopting the first three stages of the “Design-based Research” methodology. The first stage involved “Problem identification and analysis”, the second stage involved “Design and development of the prototype” and the third stage involved “Evaluation of the prototype”. The implementation was evaluated in terms of its acceptance by teachers and primary school students according to the Technology Acceptance Model. Data was collected through questionnaires and observation during implementation to the students. The data analysis revealed positive results regarding the teachers’ evaluation of acceptance and the students’ evaluation of acceptance. Students, in particular reported positively on the activities and multimedia elements incorporated in the application, describing it as a
fun learning tool that promotes collaboration.
