The variables contributing to the delay of elderly patients over 65 years old in visiting a tertiary health care institute during the pandemic COVID 19
Summary:
Background: In this study we investigate the variables that may contribute to prehospital
delay during the COVID 19 pandemic for elderly patients, i.e., those over 65 years
old. These variables had been studied before the pandemic, though it seems that not all
variables have been studied adequately and some factors need further clarification as to
their contribution to prehospital delay. The pandemic creates a new environment in
which we do not know whether well-studied variables of prehospital delayare still valid
and in which new and possibly more important variables may emerge. With our
research we tried to explore the relationship of all those variables with prehospital delay
in this new environment.
Methodology: We recruited 35 patients from the 1st Internal Medicine Clinic from July
2021 to October 2021 that answered our questionnaire using convenience sampling.
Results: 25/35 (71,4%) patients presented to the hospital with significant delay ( ≥ 3
days), while only 12/35 (34,3%) patients delayed in contacting a physician. However,
from the analysis of the collected data, we could not establish statistically significant
association with prehospital delay, for any the studied factors.
Conclusions: We suggest the research be repeated with a greater number of
participants, a different sampling method and one that focuses on fewer variables
considering those in which we saw a trend of association with delay.
