Disability representations in awareness videos as reflections of dominant ideological structures
Summary:
Bodies transform constantly depending on their context while history is inscribed upon them (Garland- Thomson, 2005). As elements for visual culture, advertisements, posters, the internet, cinema, television, press and photography, form sensibilities (Traue et al., 2019). Awareness ads function as artifacts of the cultural production of stigma for disability (Wang, 1992). Audiovisual material coming from the philanthropic sector, aiming to raise disability awareness, should be discussed within the context of dominant culture and disability representation politics (Barnes, 1992). Awareness videos act as vehicles for ideological paraphernalia, reproducing structures such as the ‘personal tragedy’ narrative along with a variety of stereotypes (Barnes, 1992) that depoliticize the struggles of the disabled (Shakespeare, 1994) by perpetuating the medical-individual perspective. The present research explores disability representations in awareness videos available in user oriented social media platforms on the hypothesis that representations reflect dominant ideological mechanisms which affect the emancipatory process of the disabled in the greek context, as well as the collective knowledge production for disability, in the popular media. The qualitative content and visual analysis of 17 awareness videos, manipulating the interpretative approaches based on the analytical categories of disability models, is conducted on the levels of subject, narrative, image, the correlation between diversity and disability, the concept of social participation, social exclusion, and the propositions to dismantle it. My analysis proposes that subject and cause are relevant, knowledge and visibility are crucial dynamics in the process of awareness, while dominant ideology mechanisms correspond with the moving image on a technical and an aesthetic-philosophical level to form an ableist disability sensibility that endangers the subjectivities and lived experiences of the disabled.
