Summary:
Street market, as an institution which has started during the Byzantine years, comes a long way, emphasizing its social role, its relation to time, to urban area and to the sense of neighborhood. It constantly demonstrates the significancy which itself receives as an event within the social life of each aera's residents. Being a vibrant cultural part, it shows diversity and pluralistic disposal. Street market doesn't remain stationary, but it's a part of a process of continuous development and renewal. On the other hand, garment acts as a communication code and a transmission of notions and characteristics among people. Culture and fashion trends influence the way people dress, while the choice of modern fabrics by people depends on factors such as age, sex, and nationality. Through a garment, the structure of materialistic culture is imprinted on the human body, while, at the same time, some personal characteristics of the person who wears it are also being stated. Fashion emphasizes the differences, the individuality, while it forms social identities via certain procedures. When fashion choices and personal taste collaborate, trends are being created, which shape the generic sense of aesthetics. Having as an example the transaction of clothing in the street markets of Piraeus, the individual efforts become obvious in order to follow the fashion trends via choosing clothes as cheap as possible. Also, through this research, the deccision making processes of the comumers are being examined. The seller asic parameter for this process to be accomplished, and the effort he make through his speech and his loud voice to attract clients and byers by making to everyone known the low prces of his products. The place and spesifically the neighborhood where the street markets are taking place are working as connecting links of social groups. The different social layers which somebody can meet in the neighbors of street markets and the presence mainly of women to the tables which are selling clothes strenghten even more the power of clothing and citizens' efffort to adapt in society's system, through their clothing, customized, to the aesthitic perception which each one has for the garment and taste. For data collection on the spot research took place with the use of questionnaires.
