Folk music in the turkish and greek musical collections of late Οttoman era: Popular culture and intercommunal relations
Summary:
Various musical genres were developed in the capital city and the urban centers of the Ottoman empire, during the entire Ottoman era. These genres are associated with the Ottoman culture and the palace, the religious and ethnoreligious groups that consisted the empire’s population, as also with the several aspects of living in the empire: the culture of the palace, the everyday life, entertainment, religious life, etc. The present thesis deals with the music that was employed mostly by the Turkish and Greek speaking populations of the empire, while focusing on the folk music of the aforementioned communities. The musical collections that increased during the late Ottoman period (amid 19th-early 20th century) provides us with enough evidence about the musical varieties of these communities at that time, as they include pieces of both popular and literary repertoire, although there is no clear distinction between these genres. In particular, the collections of this period contain folk music in a more regular manner than before, a fact that is directly related to the political, social and general ideological trends of the time. This common tendency that arose both in the Muslim and Rum populations that are examined in the present thesis, indicates an innermost intercommunal relation. Moreover, the Turkish pieces that are found in the Greek collections of Rum musicians deliver further definite data for the investigation of the same intercommuncal relations. The present thesis’ objective is to examine the Turkish and Greek musical collections of late Ottoman era, to elaborate the folk musical context which they record and to provide facts around the engagement with folk culture as also about the intercommunal relations of the specific time period.
