COVID-19 and e-health services: The need for digital transformation and healthcare innovation
Summary:
The COVID-19 pandemic was one of the most significant societal crises worldwide and has forced many governments to implement restrictive measures avoiding the risk of infection. A qualitative research was conducted using systematic literature review in the research field of Medicines to explore the key challenges this pandemic poses on the organizational design and operational activities of health systems to meet people’s health needs. COVID-19 has caused unprecedented societal disturbance leading to a global transformation of healthcare with positive and negative impacts in the care pathway. In this new landscape, it is important to research patient’s pain points or emotional experiences and to acknowledge difficulties in doctor-patient communication. Grounded in the rich data obtained from the literature, we emphasize on the barriers to care of cancer patients and how COVID-19 affects them. Our study suggests that health crisis is a driver of digital transformation and outlines the benefits, harms and uses of eHealth services in managing patients with cancer, mental health or neurological disorders.

After coming out of the financial crisis, Greece is facing yet another crisis – that of the COVID-19 outbreak. It is evident that the country is steadily building an innovative and highly competitive digital profile improving its position in EU rankings year-over-year. This study describes the Greek experience regarding the digital response measures which implemented in practice with primary focus on increasing the protection especially to vulnerable populations, while also maintaining sufficient care for Greek patients. Moreover, evolving digital health interventions of improving healthcare services and infrastructure in Greece are discussed. The results enable the identification of a set of actions with high impact for academic practitioners and healthcare providers for delivering effective healthcare services enabled by technology. This study will contribute towards a better understanding of digital transformation in healthcare and facilitate the discovery of new eHealth solutions to handle and recover by the pandemic.
