Summary:
The purpose of the present thesis is to investigate and demonstrate the main postmodern characteristics in Eugene Trivizas’ subversive way of writing. His prominent contribution in the field of the postmodern fairytale both in Greek and in world literature is demonstrated by this research.
In the first part of this thesis, we examine the theoretical aspects of postmodernism as a literary concept, its frame of promotion and main point of view. Subsequently, the context of our interest specifies in the postmodern fairytale and starting from there we examine furthermore the role of the author and the reader, but also the way childhood is depicted in children’s postmodern literature.
Following that, we display the fundamental features of the postmodern way of writing, which are later highlighted by specific examples in the books that we selected from Eugene Trivizas’ writing course. The fundamental features of postmodern literature are intertextuality, metafiction, humor interconnected with parody, irony and satire, language play, excess and disruption of literary boundaries and conventions and reader’s participation.
Moreover, the method of research is presented. The method of qualitative content analysis is chosen as the most appropriate method of research conduction. According to the method of context analysis, specific books from the prolific writer Eugene Trivizas are deliberated. The books that we considered more suitable for this research are books which aim to young readers with literary fluency and more mature reading experience for them to associate better with the meaning and ideology that the writer is about to transmit through his postmodern way of writing.
The study and analysis of the work of Trivizas lead us to the conclusion that he is a pioneer writer who renews with every chance the content and form of children’s literature. In his own unique way, he manages to combine the traditional form with the innovative elements of postmodern writing in perfect harmony. By using postmodern literary elements, he uncovers the conventions of fiction, he depicts the fairytale as both a form of construction and a game and asks his readers to participate in the making of his literary world. He also overturns outdated ideas, intensifies his readers’ critical thinking and he mainly marches in the world of literature with imagination and creativity always by his side.
