Opinions and expectations of refugee parents of children with and without disabilities regarding their educational background
Summary:
Education is a deeply political issue, whether it’s seen as a mean of emancipation or as a mean of disciplining the people to whom it is addressed. The terms of inclusive education, transformed and misinterpreted as fragmentary, conservative and technocratic adaptations of the Greek education system, in terms of the education of refugee children with or without disabilities, led to the political choice and decision for the establishment and operation of a separated form of reception and education (DYEP) within the structures that live temporarily, in a closed dominion. The present qualitative research aims to investigate and cognizance the perceptions and values of the parents of children attending DYEP in terms of their education, as well as studying the factors that shape their expectations regarding their educational course. The methodology is constructed of nine semi-structured interviews conducted for data collection and the findings are presented and analysed by content analysis. The conjunction between the theoretical framework and the results highlights the need and requirement for the recognition of refugees as individuals whose experiences and desires are important to be considered and included in the effort to overthrow conservative and restrictive institutional policies, with a focus on education. The main conclusions of the study focus on the unbearable sojourn of refugee parents and their families in the temporary accommodation facilities, accompanied by a variety of tactics of obstructing their freedoms, affecting their expectations regarding the education of their children. In addition, the diagnoses of disabled children serve as an additional function of undermining the refugee students, leading to a form of "criminalization" of the being refugee.
