The Democratic deficit of European Union and the direct participation of the citizens.
Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the democratic deficit of the EU, as a dynamic and evolving entity, according to the direct participation of citizens. Popular sovereignty is the legitimizing basis of every democratic state and every state power in the order of legitimacy, by the citizens. For the proper development of the above, the first chapter includes the historical review of the EU through the basic conditions and the second the definition of the characteristics of a democratic state and the following categorizations, as the european project borrows data from different forms of states, creating a confusion. In a next stage, European citizenship is defined along with its legal background, in order to structure the factors that prevented the realization of this concept in practice.
The current situation highlights the mechanisms developed by the Union in response to the successive crises of recent decades, mechanisms that helped to build a more resilient and united model, which brought to the surface fundamental issues from the creation of the Union and did not allow to proceed with the establishment of a constitution. In conclusion, the structural deficits of the EU are fundamental and intractable, which is why the answer to be given to them should not be trapped in the classical state models of democracies but should correspond to the peculiar nature of the project.
