The devolution of family property in the island of Astypalea: Dowry contracts of 19th and 20th century
Summary:
The subject of this thesis is to study the transmission of family property in the Greek island of Astypalea, through the unpublished dowry contracts, covering the years between 19th and 20th century. Τhis study is based on 50 unpublished manuscript documents, where considered, consisting mainly of dowry contracts and secondarily testaments, in which the procedure of the transmission of the family goods is depicted. Moreover, property transmission systems from all over Greece are presented as exemplification, focusing in majority on studies that have been contacted for the islands of the Aegean sea and largely for those of the Dodecanese. The methodology that was followed was based on the discovery, classification, transcription and thorough study of manuscripts and unpublished juristic documents that where collected and with the parallel review of the available and relevant literature. Furthermore, a part of the Dodecanesean press examined in which a published testimony from 1926 was discovered regarding the tradition of dowry uses in Astypalea.
In summary, by this study a first hermeneutics approach regarding the system of property transmission, around the end of 19th and the start of 20th century. The research subject of this study is revolving around comparative study on the distribution of the family property in Greece, but also in the gives emphasis on the gendered and aged hierarchical relations. By extension the complex mechanisms that conserve the social structure of the area under study are explored.
