The effectiveness of script training procedure with or without fading with individuals with ASD ; A meta-analytical research.
Summary:
One of the key features of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is severe deficits in social communication and interaction. Interventions that include script fading procedures are very helpful in language development, while, at the same time, they enhance verbal communication and key social skills to people with ASD. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to combine the findings of research examining the effects of script fading procedures on the development of social skills in people with ASD.
Twelve types of single subject experimental designs met the predetermined criteria and were included in the current meta-analysis. These studies were published between 2013 and 2020 and were analyzed for variables such as age of the participants, settings, intervention characteristics, experimental design, etc. Moreover, they were evaluated for the quality of their experimental design, based on the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC,2017) guidelines. Also, the effect size of the interventions was calculated with two non-parametric indices: (a) Percentage of Non- overlapping Data (PND) and (b) Tau-U.
The results of the meta-analysis demonstrated the effectiveness of script fading procedures in developing social interaction and communication skills in people with ASD. In the 12 studies included in the analysis, 49 children and adults with ASD
-aged 3-21 years - participated. Most of the studies were conducted in the school environment. According to the non-parametric indices intervention packages that include script fading procedures were characterized as effective to very effective. In conclusion, this teaching technique is an evidence-based practice (Wong et al., 2013. WWC, 2017). Further research in this field is needed and suggestions are made in the discussion.
