Distance education under pandemic conditions (covid-19) professional burnout of primary and secondary grade teachers
Summary:
This study investigates the possibility that teaching through a distance education platform, under the conditions in which it was conducted in Greece during the school year 2020-2021, increased the levels of burnout among teachers who implemented it in general primary and secondary schools. A key objective was also set to identify those elements that create additional stress and intensify burnout.
Simple random sampling was followed and data was collected using Google Forms. The research instrument used is the standardized questionnaire, which, apart from the first part concerning the demographic data of the survey, also includes the DASS Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, the Teachers' Burnout Scale and the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES).
The final sample consisted of 169 primary and secondary school teachers who worked in a school context during the school year 2021-2022 in both face-to-face and distance teaching conditions. The results showed that in the individual scales of depression, anxiety and stress as well as in those of burnout, higher scores were recorded by women, with a permanent employment relationship, specialization PE70 and PE02, with 6 - 15 or more than 26 years of service.
The prevailing trend in terms of teaching effectiveness is clearly in favour of face-to-face teaching, regardless of the gender or age of the teachers, with the exception of teachers who had experience in distance learning programs. In terms of classroom management and student engagement, teachers do not feel ready and competent to apply distance education in their teaching work.
