Fake news on refugee/migration flows. How NGOs in Greece perceive and deal with the phenomenon
Summary:
Fake news become more and more a key phenomenon in everyday information flows,
especially on the internet. It plays a key role in the formation of the citizens’ and
stakeholder’s’ attitudes and decision making in the fields they operate. Apart from this,
we know that in each single country the majority of the production and consumption of
fake news is often related to the most important problem according to the public opinion
polls. From this perspective in several countries the majority of fake news is tightly
connected to refugee/migration flows, especially after 2015.
In the current proposed research project, we aim to investigate what is the knowledge
of the NGO members in Greece dealing with refugees/migrants, in quantitative and
qualitative terms. In addition to the general examination of the phenomenon of false
news, will attempt to justify the attitudes of NGO workers on this issue, but also its
existence in the NGOs themselves based on sociological theories of adoption of these
individual attitudes.
An attempt will be made to formulate the research sample, based on the characteristics
of the sample members, such as professional experience, educational level, type, and
political orientation of the NGO in which they work, based on which we will try to
interpret their answers to the questions we will interview them. In the research we will
try to find out how the employees of the NGOs perceive the false news in their
workplace if they know ways to fight them in general, if they have participated in
actions to fight them. but also, on what factors their attitude to the above issues depends,
we will design and conduct empirical research. Furthermore, we will try to examine the
knowledge and attitude towards false news as variables that depend on other variables
(e.g., educational level, etc.).
