Study of the major earthquakes that hit Greece, America and Japan.Socio-economic impacts and legislative regulations.
Summary:
Great earthquakes are events that cause devastating effects on people's lives, property, and state economies. In the present study, the major earthquakes that occurred in Greece, the United States of America and Japan, the implications they had in each nation, as well as the changes that took place in terms of civil protection policies and anti-seismic regulations, are investigated. In each earthquake case, the consequences are analyzed as well as the actions developed to relieve the victims. The reviews of the existing regulations re also conducted. Specifically, in the Introduction section, the term "big earthquake" is defined and the individual parameters of the term are given. The first chapter examines in detail the nineteen cases of large earthquakes that struck Greece between1810, when the first earthquake occurred in Crete, and 2021, when the most recent earthquake struck Arkalochori. The second chapter reports the major earthquakes that occurred in the United States during the same period, beginning with New Madrid earthquake in 1811, and concluding with the earthquake that struck Chignik, Alaska in 2021. Major earthquakes in Japan are mentioned in the third chapter. The analysis spans the years 1855, with the Edo earthquake, and 2011, when the Fukushima earthquake was recorded. The fourth chapter delves into the seismic legislation in the three countries under consideration, and the changes that have been adopted in seismic standards over the years. The seismic regulations are discussed, as are the differences between the three countries, and the differences in the strategies used by the countries under consideration to deal with major earthquakes are enumerated. The conclusion of the present research is also presented in the same chapter.
