The Modern Digital School; The Application of the "Flipped Classroom” in Secondary Education and the Teachers' Opinions
The development of modern technology has led the educational community looking for new ways of attracting students who have already incorporated its use in their everyday lives, in an effort to make its methods something familiar and appealing to them. Consequently, new technologies are being integrated into the modern way of education. One of the most recent teaching approaches is the model of the “Flipped Classroom.”
The “Flipped Classroom” approach was introduced to the Greek education system during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which worked as a catalyst for drastic changes to Education System, as well as – as many estimate – shaped the attitude of teachers towards a form of hybrid learning. This new teaching method, deviates from the traditional teacher-centered teaching. A pupil’s first contact with new information is done at home with the use of appropriate technology and digital multimedia material. In the classroom, the student-centered educational techniques are applied, which are characterized by teamwork, productive collaboration, interaction between the students themselves and between teachers and students, critical thinking and discovery learning.
The following thesis is going to thoroughly investigate: a) the teaching method of the “Flipped Classroom” through the evaluation of the learning outcomes as they arise during its application; b) the opinions, the attitude and the degree of readiness of Secondary Education teachers attempting to adapt this new teaching model; and c) to investigate the possibilities and results of the application of the “Flipped Classroom” model focusing towards establishing it in Greek learning environments. As part of this research, an online questionnaire was created using Google Forms in which 102 Secondary Education teachers participated.
The conducted research, the questionnaire results and conclusions will be presented, after analyzing the theoretical part of the “Flipped Classroom” and distant education in general as part of a new teaching process. The data collected from the questionnaire are described in the following thesis and have been supported by an inductive statistical analysis with the help of IBM SPSS STATISTICS to confirm the results. In conclusion, the opinions and attitude of Secondary Education teachers towards the implementation and the level of readiness towards the “Flipped Classroom” approach are mostly positive.
