A study of traffic accidents in Greece (2007 - 2021)
Summary:
The traffic of vehicles and pedestrians is an integral part of the daily activity of modern hu-man. Injuries from traffic accidents constitute one of the biggest problem of public health and a case of death, injurie and disability all over the world. In Greece in the period from 2007 to 2021 the number of accidents was higher than the average of EU. From 2012 to 2019 the number is lower. The behavior of the driver (consumption of alcohol before driving, absence of good sleep and rest before a long – time driving etc.), the infringements of Road Safety Code and technology are the main factors leading to an accident.
This Master Thesis examines the traffic accidents that have happened in Greece during the last fifteen years (2007 – 2021), investigates their causes, processes and analyses the data and highlights conclusions. Moreover, it examines the distribution of the accidents by region, the quality of road network, the month, the day, the time and the means of transport involved in an accident, the demographic data of people (injured or died driving a road accident) using tables and diagrams.
Based on data of traffic accidents in Greece collected from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (HELSTAT) and Hellenic Police for period from 2007 to 2021, this study presents aggregate tables, graphs and data of descriptive statistic, aiming to provide important information on the course of traffic accidents and their consequences. The processing and analysis of the data of this study’s results lead to the conclusion that traffic accidents are reduced, due to the im-provement of the road network in Greece, the advances of vehicles technology, drivers’ edu-cation (road safety lesson from primary school) and tightening of measures.
