Summary:
Introduction: Chronic kidney disease is a global serious health problem of the general population, with a poor prognosis. The prevalence of the disease is 8-16% worldwide and there is a strong association of the disease with an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases with a high mortality rate.
Purpose: The purpose of the present systematic review was to explore the psychosocial implications of chronic kidney disease and kidney transplantation.
Material and Method: A systematic literature review in international databases (Pubmed, Cinahl, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library) was performed. A time limited criteria was applied with respect to the publication of articles (articles published in the last 20 years). Five articles were found that met the criteria for participation in the review.
Results: From the thematic analysis of the results, the following themes emerged in terms of psychosocial implications in chronic kidney disease and kidney transplantation. The first section mainly concerns the symptoms of anxiety and depression experienced by patients with chronic kidney disease and the second section concerns the patients' quality of life.
Conclusions: Health professionals can have a decisive role in promoting the psychosocial health of patients with chronic kidney disease. The aim is to improve the quality of life of patients by applying strategies such as psychosocial educational programs for self-management of the disease.
