The effect of leadership on performance appraisal: an empirical investigation in the banking industry in Greece
Summary:
The dissertation focuses on the investigation of influence of the leadership in the performance appraisal of the employees in the Hellenic banking sector. The importance of the work lies in the development of a performance appraisal system by the banking institutions that will offer reliable results, so that the appropriate strategies cannot be designed by the banks, regarding the management of their Human Resources, based on objective data.
In this context, a theoretical approach to the issue took place and then a survey was conducted with the participation of 11 bank employees from banking institutions in Greece. In particular, through the research methodology followed and the conduct of semi-structured interviews, an attempt was made to investigate three research questions and draw important conclusions about the factors that shape the leadership in the Greek banking sector, the degree of satisfaction of the banking employees’ in terms of their performance, as well as the role of leadership in this process.
The research showed that the purpose of using the evaluation systems is to determine the goals of performance and development of employees, to identify the educational needs, to link the performance and rewards of employees and to improve the image of employees through their feedback. The findings, also, show how the results of the performance appraisal are influenced by the personal perceptions and attitudes of the leaders, as a result of their inability to fulfill the responsibilities assigned to them properly. Therefore, one of the most important administrative practices, performance appraisal, fails to achieve the desired results, leading to stagnation and irrational planning.
It also examines, how leadership can contribute to finding a performance appraisal system that will effectively serve its purpose, exploring both the concept of leadership in depth and how it could be applied in the modern Hellenic banking industry, for maximum success.
