Promotion of teens and young adults' autonomy through motivational interviewing
Summary:
Introduction – Background: Motivational interviewing is an effective method that
deals with the ambivalences that prevent the person from taking the decision and
making the required change regarding their harmful daily habits. It is used in more
and more situations in the health care and seems to be useful in difficult situations.
Recent evidence shows positive results of the motivational interviewing in teenagers
and young adults referring to some health problems.
Aim: The investigation of the effectiveness of motivational interviewing in
adolescents’ and young adults’ autonomy and self-efficacy.
Methodology: A search was conducted in scientific databases PubMed and Google
Scholar for articles published from 2010 to 2021 in English or Greek language.
Results: I found 114 studies that took place mainly in the USA and Canada, but also
in France, Thailand, Portugal, Norway, England, Iran, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Australia
and Germany. These studies refer to adolescents and young adults aged 10-25
years and took place mainly in schools, regular outpatient clinics, primary health
care structures in the community. The use of motivational interviewing has been
shown to be effective in adolescents and young adults in increasing their autonomy,
self-esteem and self-efficacy. It manages to sensitize them to their health problems
or harmful habits by resolving their ambivalence, helping them to commit to making
the required decision to change and at the same time educating them on how to
maintain the desired results and not relapse. Motivational interviewing increases
the motivation, critical thinking and efforts of adolescents and young adults to
achieve the goals they set with greater self-confidence, better self-image, improved
behavior and communication relationships in the family and community.
Conclusions- Suggestions: The method of Motivational interviewing is a very good
tool in the hands of health professionals to deal with several problems of
adolescents and young adults. Yet the application of the method requires training and
constant friction on their part. It is proposed to be integrated into all healthcare
services provided in the community.
