Suicide attempts in patients admitted to the General Hospital and evaluated by the Interconnective-Consultative Psychiatry unit: Differences according to age
Summary:
Introduction In Greece, during the last years of the rapid economic deterioration, studies documenting the course of suicide show a significant increase in the suicide rate in patients with mental disorders. Research regarding the association of suicidal behavior and demographic factors such as gender and age indicates that young women attempt more than men. Men make fewer suicide attempts, but have higher suicide rates, peaking at age 60+. It has been shown that socio-economic factors such as unemployment, economic hardship and social exclusion, combined with the increased prevalence of mental morbidity in the population have magnified the risk for vulnerable age groups.
Purpose This present work studied the differences in terms of age of attempted patients admitted to the "Attikon" University General Hospital, with the reason for admission being the recent suicide attempt with regard to gender, method of attempt, recent stressful events, psychopathology and previous attempt history.
Material and method This is an observational/retrospective study and refers to 548 patients 370 women and 178 men, aged 18-60+ years, who were evaluated by the team of Interconnective Psychiatry of P. G. N "Attikon", during the period 2010-2019 with a referral request " self-harm attempt or suicide attempt ".
Results It was found that women make more suicide attempts and most of them are in the 18-35 age group. More suicide attempts were made by the single/divorced/widowed, the unemployed and those living with others, who were found to be significantly younger than those who lived "alone". As the age increases from 18-35 to 60+ years, the percentage of women who make suicide attempt decreases and the percentage of men increases accordingly. Most attempts were non-violent with the majority being medicinal. The presence of recent stressful life events was statistically significant. The most frequent were death, health problems of a family member and intra-family conflicts .With Depression, a significantly higher percentage is observed in the ages of 60+, while a higher percentage of at least one mental disorder is observed in the ages of 36-59. No significant change was observed in the percentage of attempted patients with a history of attempts based on their age distribution. A significant increase in the average age is observed, as the number of previous attempts increases.
