Summary:
The aim of this work is to investigate the effects that pets and animals in general can have on the cognitive and social development of children and adolescents as well as the effects on their psychology. Our purpose is to highlight the importance and importance of these effects on their smooth mental and emotional development. Also important is their contribution to the social development of children and to the improvement of their school performance. Especially these effects are judged to be very important in people with particularities such as children with autism, distraction and hyperactivity.The research methodology of this work is that of a literature review. Research in literature related to pet and life issues in general as well as their effects on children and adolescents. The selection of the articles as well as the criteria based on which the research was carried out has the following elements:
There is the relevant literature related to research concerning the effect of pet ownership on the behavior, emotional, cognitive and general development of adolescents and children.First, abstracts were screened to select studies that were relevant to the research. Studies excluded on the basis of content and considered irrelevant to the aim of this paper included data on the effect of pets on older people and the use of animals for research purposes (higher education, biology and other natural science departments).
The work includes four (4) chapters. The first chapter mentions which animals qualify as companion animals, as well as the positive effects of pets on people in general.The role of the pet as a transitional object is mentioned, as well as the significant effects that pets have on the mental, emotional and cognitive world of children, and in particular their significant benefits in mental health and social development. In the second chapter, there is a reference to the effects of the interaction between pets and people, especially children. The extensive reference to the effects ofpets in adolescents both in their mental and social development and in their physical activity. The third chapter focuses on the role that companion animals can play in the field of education. Reference is made to research and pedagogical systems that evaluate and use animals as well as the impact that such innovation can have on improving the results of the teaching process.The fourth chapter focuses on research results on the socio-emotional development of children in relation to pets, the presence of pets at various levels of education as a motivation for learning, reducing stress and increasing their physical activity, as well as the possibility of self-regulation and improving the executive function that the presence of animals can offer, especially to children with autistic spectrum disorders, attention deficit and hyperactivity.
