Summary:
This thesis examines the Venetian influences on the architecture of Monemvasia with references to the history of the period that lays between its foundation and the Greek Revolution of 1821. Although the text focuses on the A’ Venetian possession (1463-1540) and the B’ Venetian possession (1694 - 1713), however, the narrative is extended in the periods of different conquerers, of Byzantine medieval and modern history in order to have an holistic point of view and a more complete interpretation of the architectural in-print.
In terms of topography Topographically, the area under study is the Castle-City that is situated on the rock of Monemvasia which is located at the southeastern Peloponnese in the prefecture of Lakonia.
The central axis of the research is the concept of the palimpstest that applies in Monemvasia. During the investigation, data are listed on the urban structure planning of the castle area and the evolution of the “άστυ”, as shaped by each architectural trends and styles. At the same time, reference is made to the general characteristics as well as the particular ones that dictated this development and played a crucial role. Their composition aims to identify the Venetian influences and interventions - either assumed or checked - by analyzing their features and finding their synapses.
