Artificial intelligence and the gender gap, a sociolegal approach
Summary:
The evolution of artificial intelligence embodies the gender inequality that exists in our society. The problem of the gender gap in artificial intelligence lies primarily in the biased data used to train AI, which perpetuates gender stereotypes. Gender biases were built into AI applications widening the gender gap again. One of the biggest risks from artificial intelligence lies in gender discrimination, which is not always visible and in the existing legal framework is difficult to prosecute. The very nature of AI with its complex models and algorithms makes it difficult to access and influence the code in order to eliminate gender discrimination that leads to an even wider gender gap. Despite existing legislation on gender equality and non-discrimination on the basis of gender, the gender gap in general and in AI science in particular remains large and calls for gender mainstreaming in AI policy and at all stages of its design by creating socially sensitive algorithms and enforcing algorithmic fairness.
