Summary:
The animal protagonist in artistic representations is not something new, nor is it unusual for artists to go beyond the boundaries of their art to create a unique style using unconventional methods. This thesis addresses one such practice, the use of the animal, dead or alive, in postmodern art of the 20th and 21st centuries. It focuses on works that choose for aesthetic pleasure the paradoxical attraction that the animal-insect, predominantly seen as disgusting, evokes. The paper examines the reasons why artists choose the insect as a medium, the meaning they attach to their idea by using the insect, and the impact their inspiration has on the insect itself. It then identifies that the new role of the insect as an artistic medium both raises the issue of the identity of the insect and of the human being, and reflects the anthropocentric notion that nature is available for human intervention of all kinds. Keeping in mind the alarming loss of biodiversity due to this intervention, the paper makes an ethical assessment of the redefinition of the insect as an artistic medium. It concludes that the use of the insect in art confuses the public viewer, rather than shifting the discussion to redefining the human-insect relationship.
