Synthesis and characterization of two new fullerene derivatives bearing a catechol moiety
Summary:
Fullerenes are compounds belonging to the carbon allotrope family. Their size and
geometry depend on the number of carbon atoms which are present in the carbon cage.
The most characteristic representative is C60, which consists of 60 carbon atoms and its
structure resembles a soccer ball. Fullerenes and their derivatives find biological and
technological applications. Among others there are fullerene derivatives offering the
possibility of coordination with metals and the formation of metallofullerenes, which have
unique redox properties. In the present thesis, the discovery of the fullerenes and their
preparation methods are first described. Subsequently, some of the C60’s reactions and its
derivatives’ complexation with metals are discussed. Finally, the reactions that are
involved in the synthesis of the new fullerene derivatives related to the present thesis, as
well as the efforts for their optimization are analyzed. The intermediates and the final
products have been characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (
1HNMR and 13C-NMR) as well as high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and MALDITOF spectrometry. The new fullerene derivatives bear a catechol group as a substituent
aiming to the coordination with transition metals. The fullerene-transition metal complexes
will be studied with regards to their redox properties and their electrocatalytic ability.
