Perceptions and experiences of newly appointed primary, general education teachers who serve in schools in island regions regarding issues of promotion and implementation of inclusive education in the Greek education system
Summary:
In recent decades inclusive education has been reduced to a primary issue of debates and provisions. Despite this, significant challenges are still observed between theory and practice. On these findings, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the perceptions and experiences of Primary Education teachers working in the general primary school regarding inclusive education. The semi-structured interview method was used to carry out the research. Interviews were conducted with 10 newly appointed permanent teachers who serve in general public primary schools in the South Aegean region. The conclusions reached by the analysis of the research material indicate that the majority of the sample has distorted views on the concept and method of inclusive education. However, the majority of them are positive towards the education of all students in an inclusive educational framework, but at the same time they have reservations about whether this can be implemented in the Greek general school and based on the existing detailed curriculum, the legislation and the existing financial resources. At the same time, the proposals of the teachers are put forward to improve the effectiveness of the institution of inclusive education with the request being the early recruitment of teaching staff, the improvement of the infrastructure, the restructuring of school textbooks, the updating of the current legislation and the finding and utilization of financial resources for the orderly operation of school units. The teachers in the sample express the need for training to promote inclusive education mainly through the acquisition of corresponding postgraduate degrees and in person seminars with feedback at regular intervals in experiential learning workshops.
