Investigating psychological trauma and its corellation with aggression in a population with personality disorder or maladaptive traits and in a control group
Summary:
Psychological trauma and especially traumatic childhood experiences have been associated with aggression and personality disorders. The purpose of this research was to investigate psychological trauma and its correlation with aggression in a population of individuals with a personality disorder and in a control group. 41 people from the Personality Disorders Unit of the Aiginhteio Hospital and 40 witnesses from the community participated in the present research. The Aggression and Direction of Aggression Questionnaire (HDHQ) was used to measure aggression, the Early Trauma Inventory–Self Report (ETI) questionnaire was used to measure psychological trauma, while the semi-structured diagnostic Clinical Interview for the DSM-5 Personality Disorders (SCID 5- PD) was used to evaluate personality disorders. The results of the present study showed that the population of individuals with a personality disorder and the control group did not differ in terms of educational attainment, but they did differ in terms of vocational rehabilitation, with the population of individuals with a personality disorder having higher rates of unemployment. Also, individuals with personality disorder in the present study reported higher emotional and sexual abuse trauma scores, and higher scores on extraverted and introverted aggression than control group. Specifically, individuals with paranoid disorder reported more experiences of emotional abuse, individuals with borderline disorder more experiences of emotional and sexual abuse, while individuals with avoidant disorder reported more experiences of sexual abuse compared to the total sample. Regarding aggression, individuals with paranoid and borderline disorder scored higher on extraverted and introverted aggression. Individuals with antisocial disorder scored higher on extraverted, while individuals with avoidant disorder scored higher on introverted aggression than the total sample. A positive correlation was found between emotional and sexual abuse trauma and extraverted and introverted aggression. Finally, it was found that people with emotional abuse trauma experiences have a 1.6 higher likelihood of developing a personality disorder, while people with sexual abuse trauma experiences have a 3.4 higher chance of developing a personality disordered.
