The Islamic terrorism as a threat to the West
Summary:
The West, as a group of politically, economically and culturally homogeneous states, centered on the EU and the USA, faces a major threat, which targets the foundations of its value code, even its very existence, as a model of global governance. The Islamic jihadist movement, largely defined by its opposition to the West, challenged the dominance of the Western world and shook the sense of security it enjoyed. Islamist terrorism has launched carefully planned and spectacular attacks against the demonized West, targeting its symbols of power, wanting to send the message that no one is safe anymore. Beginning from 11/09/2001, the largest attack by Islamists terrorists to hit the West and ending conventionally with the dominance of Western powers over the Islamic Caliphate in 2019, a rising period of Islamic terrorism is defined, dominated by the action of its two main representatives, meaning the organizations of al-Qaeda and ISIS. The true magnitude of the terrorist threat against the West is examined, through the recording of attacks and casualties, as well as the economic cost, for the above-mentioned time period. An attempt is made to investigate the discrepancy between the real threat and the perceived one by the West. The concern of public opinion is recorded, the mechanisms shaping the perception of the threat are studied, as well as the methods applied by the terrorists themselves to shape the perception.
