The role of physiotherapy in the management of whiplash injury
Summary:
Whiplash injury is a very common pathology which refers to the mechanism of the injury, and the associated energy transfers to the cervical region as result of an accident, most likely occurred by a vehicle injury. This sudden impact at the cervical spine may result in bony and soft tissue injuries (whiplash trauma) and the development of a wide variety of clinical manifestations commonly named whiplash-associated disorder (WAD). The patients have a total of symptoms, such as pain, headache, stiffness and neurological deficits and as a result the quality of life and their psychological state is decreased. Those injuries have many effects and costs in a patient's personal and work life, so treatments that can cure the symptomatology are needed.
The published reviews have shown that there are many different physiotherapy methods that can be used for the reduction of those symptoms, individually or in combination, showing the importance of those methods in the management of the whiplash injury. The aim of this study is to review the role of physiotherapy for the management of the short-term and long-term symptoms of this syndrome, to mention the significance of physiotherapy science in this and to accent the correlation between different physiotherapy treatments with the acute, subacute and chronic whiplash-associated disorders (WAD).
