Summary:
This paper deals with strategic management in Greek shipping. More specifically, the first chapters analyze useful definitions and terminologies in order to create the necessary background for further analysis. Then general elements of the shipping industry are listed, and then a more specific reference is made in Greek commercial shipping. In addition, the composition and organization of a shipping company is analyzed, in terms of departments and administrations that make it up. Continuing, the types and categories of both the ships and the loads that the global and Greek fleets are called to transport are listed. Next, we observe the composition of the shipping market as well as the classic model of the shipping industry. There the types of existing charters are analyzed, while reference is made to one of the most special characteristics of the sector, which is none other than the shipping circles. Afterwards, an economic analysis of the shipping industry is made at the level of supply and demand, while the costs that characterize the specific industry clearly follow. It is also very important to mention the legislative framework in which shipping companies operate as well as the shipping policies that apply to them. In addition, the importance of strategic management for the organization and management of shipping companies is mentioned, and the types of strategy followed by them are analyzed. Finally, as an additional strategic planning tool is the analysis of both the internal and external environment of the business.
