The aim of the present thesis was to record the views of Primary School students about the grading with which the teacher express the result of the evaluation of their performance at school.
The sample of the research was students among 5th and 6th grade of the primary school of Attica. The final sample of the survey consisted of 134 students. This paper consists of two parts: the theoretical and the empirical part. The theoretical part refers to the evaluation of the student, the types of evaluation, the pedagogical content of evaluation, the stages of evaluation and its consequences, with emphasis on the consequences of negative evaluation. Moreover, it refers to assessment techniques and the choice among different evaluation techniques. Finally, the negative effects of grading are presented and, it is mentioned the relationship between grades and the function given to them, those of feedback and the motivation to learn.
The empirical part includes the research methodology, the research findings, the conclusion and the recommendations. According to student’ views, it was found that the majority of them show a positive attitude towards the use of grades, and their anxiety related to the grading process is very common. Furthermore, the grades in school create and reinforce a competitive spirit, with regard to the generalized belief that the grades do not provide any feedback to students, there are specific findings that support this statement.
