Summary:
Introduction: The nursing care of children having undergone cardiac surgery involves, among others, the successful management of the post-operative pain, which often persists and undermines each child’s post-surgical restoration.
Aims and Purposes: The purpose of the current study was the prominence of the effectiveness of the use of non- pharmacological methods in the management of post-operative pain, in children having undergone cardiac surgery.
Methodology: The databases NCBI database, PubMed database, Scopus and ResearchGate database were used, and the key-words utilized were the following ones: children cardiac surgery, non-pharmacological pain management, children post-operative pain management and nursing interventions in cardiac surgery children’s pain management. The search of the data complied with the Preferred reporting items for Systematic Reviews and Μeta-Analyses (PRISMA statement) guidelines. The inclusion criteria included: primary studies published in the English language, published 2000 and beyond, focusing on the non-pharmacological methods of management of the of post-operative pain, in children having undergone cardiac surgery.
Results: Out of the 1.573 initial studies found, and the detailed study of 47 of them, finally 5 studies were included. The non-pharmacological methods found to be effective for the management of the post-operative pain in children having undergone cardiac surgery include: Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, TENS), the local appliance of hot or cold compresses, the inculcation of hot air in the area of the pain, the immobilization of the area of the pain, music therapy, physiotherapy, massage-therapy, respiratory physiotherapy, distraction methods, and the pre-operational information and psychological preparation of the child, and of their parents. The results of the studies suggest the crucial role of the nurse in the appliance of those methods, and of the interdisciplinary cooperation, for the best clinical outcome possible of the pediatric patient.
Conclusions: The appliance of non-pharmacological methods for the management of post-operative pain, in children having undergone cardiac surgery is a basic parameter of the treatment plan, that additionally to the pharmacological treatment, maximizes the treatment result, by reducing the pain and ameliorating the post-operational period of the pediatric patient.
