«LoBGΑΜ»: A LOCATION-BASED-GAMES ACCEPTANCE MODEL FOR TEACHERS
Summary:
Mobile games and location-based games have gained the interest of researchers in the field of Education. Especially, the use of location games in the learning process has many advantages, as it allows players to connect their surrounding physical space with its historical, cultural or environmental value through on-site data collection, observation and interaction with both the environment itself and other people who are there.
Although location games have a variety of affordances, their acceptance by teachers is an important research question to be investigated. Teachers' perceptions of a technology significantly influence their intention to use it in their teaching.
The literature review revealed that there is a lack of models that examine teachers' perceptions of location games that capture the potential of this type of games. For this reason, τhe purpose of this study is to extend the technology acceptance model with a combination of factors, that are inextricably linked to the unique characteristics of location-based technology, and may influence the acceptance of those games by teachers, and to evaluate the acceptance of a location-based game by pre-service teachers.
In order to achieve the aforementioned goal, a location game was designed based on the History subject of the Primary School, which utilizes the special features of location games. In total, 82 students of the Department of Education of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens participated in the research, played the location-based game and answered afterwards an online questionnaire. The results of the survey indicated high acceptance of the location-based game by the pre-service teachers and their intention to use location-based games in their future teaching. Another important finding was the high degree of perceived enjoyment, perceived connectedness and perceived mobility of the location-based games.
