Determination of the jet identification selection criteria and comparisons between simulated and real data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC Run III
Summary:
This thesis mainly focuses on the jet quality, recorded by the CMS Experiment in Run III of the LHC during 2022 and 2023. The high mass dijet analysis is one of the high priority searches for new physics in CMS and suitable for quality studies in the TeV scale. In this context, comparisons of the distributions between data and a leading order QCD Monte Carlo have been performed mainly for the variables of high interest, such as the invariant dijet mass and the jet transverse momentum, while the event display of the highest Dijet Mass event at 7.7 TeV was also produced, in order to further examine the structure and characteristics of this event. Prior to this, detailed comparisons of the jet characteristics of two different algorithms that aim to reduce the part of the hadronic jet energy not originating from the primary interaction of interest (CHS and PUPPI) using the early Run III data and a leading order QCD Monte Carlo were also performed, in order to examine reconstruction pathologies and to ensure that it is safe enough to switch from CHS, that was the default in Runs I and II, to PUPPI in Run III. At the same time, the jet identification selection criteria for all 2022 and 2023 eras were derived, which aim to remove noise and badly reconstructed, pathological jets from the data and that are used by all CMS analyses.
