The April Uprising of 1876 in Bulgaria: The Greek perspective.
Summary:
My thesis attempts to shed light on the perception of the Bulgarian Uprising of April 1876 through the manifestations of the Greek perspective, as revealed by the press and the official documents of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The April Uprising was examined as an exacerbation of the Eastern crisis, the culmination of an era of generalized revolutions in the Balkans, and this topic was chosen for two reasons. The first relates to how this uprising was a characteristic manifestation of the changes that took place in the second half of the 19th century in the Balkan region because of the gradual decline of the Ottoman Empire and the consequent unleashing of competing nationalisms, a process that was to give way to more 'homogeneous' nations with the emergence of nation-states in the 19th century. One such example of the emergence of a nation-state was Bulgaria, which was examined in this paper. The second was that this revolt led to radical developments within the Greek kingdom, calling into question hitherto entrenched ideologies, as it was within this context that Greek nationalism was transformed through a forced course of transformation. Therefore, the main aim of this research was to be able to get as close as possible to reality as it was shaped during the turbulent years of the second half of the nineteenth century.
