Progress/Development of physical fitness parameters of children aged 5 to 10 years
Summary:
The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of age on selected
physical fitness parameters of boys and girls aged 5-10 years. The speed ability
and acceleration, flexibility, upper body strength, explosive power
of the lower limbs, cardiorespiratory endurance and abdominal muscle endurance are the parameters evaluated in both sexes.Methodology: The study involved 42 subjects (21 boys, 21 girls) who were divided into three age groups: 5-6 years old, 7-8 years old and 9-10 years old with 7 boys and 7 girls in each group. From the anthropometric characteristics, height and body mass were measured,to assess speed and acceleration ability maximal effort was used at a distance of 35 and 10 m respectively, the flexibility
assessed using the Sit and Reach test, upper body strength
assessed using the medicine ball throw, the explosive power of the lower
body was measured by the vertical jump, cardiorespiratory endurance was assessed by
the beep test, and abdominal muscle endurance were assessed using the curl-up test. For the comparison of mean values was used repeated measures ANOVA while when F was significant was used the post-hoc test Duncan to identify individual differences.
Results: Significant differences were observed in endurance, speed, explosive lower body strength, upper body strength, basic endurance, the abdominal muscle endurance in all age groups, with older children having better performance.
Conclusion: From the results of the present study appears that the physical state parameters improve significantly with increasing age of 5-10 years both in boys
as well as girls. The results also support the need for planning exercise programs of different intensity for each age group and gender in order to help the safe holistic development of young athletes.
