The use of Augmented Reality Books in supporting the Intercultural dimension in Primary Education
Summary:
Modern society is evolving quickly and the development of New Technologies plays an important role in this. The inclusion of Information and Communication Technologies in the educational process has brought about a multitude of changes within the context of the traditional/typical classroom. One of these technologies is Augmented Reality (AR), which can enhance the traditional textbook, enriching it with additional multimedia material, utilizing mobile devices. In recent years and with a constant rise in popularity and search, the technology of AR, performed through the use of mobile devices contributes to a new way of approaching knowledge, teaching and learning. Through numerous researches, the relevance of AR applications with the theory of constructivism and active learning has been demonstrated. The aforementioned create new teaching directions towards a more student-centered teaching. Nevertheless, the use of AR applications in education is very limited, while for the promotion of Interculturalism in Primary Education it is non-existent. Intercultural competence is more important than language competence, as it permeates cultural sensitivity, awareness and adaptability. Through the review of the literature, it is found that the concepts of active learning and constructivism are directly intertwined with AR applications. The purpose of this research is the design, development and formative evaluation of the AR application "SolidARity", which augments a page of the Language book (third issue) of the 4th grade. To create the application, the first three stages of the "Design-Based Research" (DBR: Design-Based Research) methodology were adopted. The first stage concerns "Identification and analysis of the problem", the second stage "Design and development of the prototype" and the third "Evaluation of the prototype". The evaluation of the application, according to the Technology Acceptance Model, was carried out among teachers and students of Primary Education and data collection was made possible through questionnaires. Through the analysis of the data, positive results are obtained, regarding the evaluation of the application by the students, while the teachers of the sample are quite cautious about the new technologies.
