Education, Training and Preparedeness of the Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" Fire Department personnel and cooperation with other public authorities in Emergency Management”
Summary:
The aviation industry faces thousands of potential emergency situations, including but not limited to severe weather events, aircraft accidents to terrorist incidents and public health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of these emergencies extends beyond airport facilities, affecting passengers, workers, airlines and local communities. According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), airports must have comprehensive Emergency Plans in place to mitigate risks and effectively manage crises.
Every airport must have an Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Unit. For this reason, Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" has had a special Airport Fire Service since the beginning of its operation. Therefore, to support flight safety, the level of preparedness of the fire service and its personnel must be high and required to be always alert for incidents or incidents in the airport area, so as to mitigate the risk of accidents and fires in the airport.
As airports continue to evolve into complex hubs of global connectivity, the need for robust emergency response planning becomes paramount. One of the fundamental principles of effective emergency planning is multi-agency and multi-stakeholder collaboration. This collaborative approach includes airport authorities, airlines, local law enforcement, fire departments, medical services, government agencies and regulatory agencies. Each entity brings unique expertise, resources and responsibilities to the table, creating a synergy that enhances preparedness and response capabilities.
