The impact of Covid-19 pandemic on domestic violence and criminality

Introduction: With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and the implementation of restrictive measures, an increase in incidents of domestic violence was observed.
Purpose: To investigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the occurrence of incidents of domestic violence, as well as criminality.
Methodology: A search for English-language literature was conducted in the Pubmed database in the time window 2020-2024. Exclusion criteria were set, so that only sources related to the period of the Covid-19 pandemic were included.
Results - Discussion: This review highlighted the contribution of the pandemic to the rise in the phenomenon of domestic violence, highlighting determinants such as socioeconomic reasons and outcomes such as physical and psychological effects. Given the lack of research data on domestic violence in Greece, further investigation is recommended, even post-pandemic.
Conclusions: The pandemic seems to have triggered incidents of domestic violence and caused physical and psychological consequences for the victims. Prevention and the development of strategies are considered essential.
