Studying the attitudes and readiness of cognitive behavioral therapists in Greece towards addressing the needs of individuals with psychotic symptoms
Summary:
Psychosis is a serious mental disorder and the stigma attached to it is extremely damaging. Cognitive behavioral psychotherapy is indicated for people with psychosis. This specific research aims to investigate the attitude and feeling of readiness of cognitive behavioral psychotherapists regarding psychosis Specifically, the study investigates the general attitude of cognitive behavioral psychotherapists and the comparison of the readiness to work with people with psychosis of those trained in cognitive behavioral therapy during this period compared to those who have completed their training in this particular approach. Also, the possible difficulties and challenges that therapists may face in working with people with psychosis are presented as the therapeutic relationship in cognitive behavioral therapy is an essential element.
The data of the specific research was collected through online questionnaires that were given exclusively to three institutions of training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. More specifically, the Opinion to mental illness (OMI) questionnaire was used. The results of the research were analyzed using the method of quantitative analysis and the statistical analysis of the data was done in an appropriately designed database of the SPSS statistical analysis software.
The factors examined for the effect of cognitive behavioral therapists' attitudes are personal and family history of mental illness, professional experience, and expertise in psychosis, with each factor separately influencing OMI subscales.
The symptoms of the disorder, non-adherence to medication and the establishing a therapeutic relationship seem to be the main difficulties and challenges in working with patients with psychosis. The difficulties reported by cognitive behavioral psychotherapists when working with people with psychosis combined with the stigma that accompanies mental illness emphasize the necessity for Early Intervention services in psychosis and the education of cognitive behavioral therapists in psychosis.
