Multicultural Dimensions in Teachers: Experiences, Attitudes, Self-Efficacy and Ideology
Summary:
The purpose of this paper is to examine issues of multiculturalism in the field of education. Although there are conflicting findings in the literature, there is evidence to support that teachers' multicultural self-efficacy is related to their attitudes about multicultural issues, their previous multicultural experiences and their ideological and political orientation. The sample that participated in this study is 438 primary and secondary school teachers. Participants completed questionnaires about their multicultural experiences, their attitudes toward multiculturalism, their multicultural self-efficacy and their political self-positioning. Teachers' attitudes toward multiculturalism were found to be positively related to both their multicultural experiences and their multicultural self-efficacy. Also, a positive correlation appears between teacher’s multicultural experiences and their multicultural self-efficacy. The three variables that mentioned above are negatively correlated with conservative political self-positioning. Regarding teachers' attitudes, there are significant gender differences. In addition, predictive and mediating models that examine the relationships of the above variables are presented. The survey’s results are in line with most of the existing literature.
